About the Tour

From Sunday 24th Ben and Richard begin their epic tour of the U.S. as part of the British Debate squad. Each year since 1922 the ESU has selected two debaters to travel the length and breadth of the country to debate, adjudicate and get a taste of life in the U.S. We'll try and keep an entertaining record of our travels on here and if you're in the U.S. let us know if we're coming to a place near you.

Greetings followers!

Apologies for the delay in our most recent blog post but we are trying to post about every different state we visit and we’ve just finished a fantastic week in Indiana.

The first part our trip was spent in Crawfordsville Indiana home of Wabash private college. The college is one that has a really rich history and tradition, as one of the only remaining all male colleges in America. We were treated to an incredible tour by one of the nicest people we’ve met in the US named Grayson. He introduced us to the world-class sports facilities that their generous alumni endowment funded!

Having dropped our bags off in their opulent guest house we prepared during the evenings to do what we do best, some good ol’ British debating. We were welcomed into a Comparative Government class taught by an incredible teacher named Ethan who was currently focusing on the British Constitution. We debated the motion: THB the US should adopt the British system of government. We hope the debate was informative, since we spent a while drawing upon our US political knowledge, which as most of you know by now is heavily derived from the West Wing!

After a great dinner and a good night's sleep we prepared for a session in a Communications class with our incredibly gracious host Jeniffer. This time we debated whether the US should end the war on drugs. A bunch of Brits attempting to dictate US foreign policy ranks however was nowhere near as surreal as the Frat houses we were welcomed into. That night we were taught to play beer-pong (something that we’ve continued to be successful at! More on this later!) and shown a really great time by the boys at Teak.

Then, the main event: THB the US needs a monarchy. With regret we were forced to commit treason in this debate, disparaging the monarchy where necessary and presumably sacrificing our knighthood prospects in the process. The debate was well contested, but with a bit of good fortune, the British accent prevailed again in the end.
